The Torch #1 (of 8)

The Torch #1 (of 8); Written by Mike Carey and Alex Ross; Art by Patrick Berkenkotter

One of the first Marvel Superheroes to headline his own title, The Torch debuted in 1939 as a creation of Carl Burgos during the 'Golden Age' of comics. Now, 70 years later, comics legends Alex Ross (Marvels, Kingdom Come) and Mike Carey (Hellblazer, X-Men) have teamed up to write The Torch, a new mini-series based around the classic character Jim Hammond. With art by newcomer Patrick Berkenkotter (who previously drew The Torch in 'Avengers/Invaders').

The Soul of an Old Machine, part 1. The Torch is dead - buried with full military honors. But what does death mean for an artificial man? The Mad Thinker is determined to find out, with the reluctant help of the Torch's best and oldest friend - Tom (Toro) Raymond.

Other comics out this week

Zombies! You like zombies? Yeah, you like the zombies. You really like them. And when they're mashing it up with the Marvel heroes, you love them so much they want to eat your brains out. So here they are again, and leading the undead pack in a new mini-series is Marvel Zombies: Spider-Man by Fred Van Lente and Nick Dragotta.

What do you like more than zombies? Super-powered superhero androids. Alongside Marvel's debut miniseries The Torch comes DC's Red Tornado in his own solo-series. If Jim Hammond wasn't enough for you, Red Tornado's near-supernatural control over wind and air should twist and turn its way happily into your comic book collection. Written by Kevin VanHook with art by Jose Luisí and J.P. Mayer.

Tired of being held back by the restraints of the JSA, Magog is out to take justice into his own hands, hunting down high-tech arms dealers and low-life scum alike. Unknowingly (and unwittingly) Magog has begun on a journey to discover his own unescapable destiny. Written by Kieth Griffen (Justice League International) and art by Howard Porter and John Dell, (JLA)
