Doctor Strange: The Oath #2 - Marvel Comics

Reviews

Fine crippled hands of a surgeon are what makes for good spell casting. Only this time, for the sake of continuity, the good Strange Doctor is a neurosurgeon, never mind the plastic rubbing slapjockey. Still, the flashbacks here proves that no amount of tinkering will escape from the arrogance so embedded in his former life in the white coats and stethoscopes.

Events aren't yet moving like after a night hitting heavy on the dates, a prune salad and some chilli-flavoured fish-fingers for taste. Delving into the mind and matter of the make up of Doctor Strange, the distractions are clear enough to need only a single scan of said pages. Light carries across the beat of the drum with the dubious nature of things hiding in the shadows.

Dead on character accuracy and never once feeling like the pants needs a megadose of that baby oil for the slip on. Subtle jabs delight with the switch kick of statements taking the ear off without spotting the bleed, not too fast though. There are a few pauses and set ups which just read well enough to cast forth a chance for all.

So what is the Night Nurse's name anyhow?

Systemic breakdown of issues and the brain

Staff picks

The Jew-hating jurnlist known as Borat gets his own up in the green swimsuit of his this Thursday November 23. Possibly clashing with people who are trying to eat their food wrapped around things not of that hot lycra green he sports. Well, every one and everybody has their tastes and if it's of hair like that, a salad without dressing is surely a criminal offence.

What comes as no surprise other than a little bit of tardiness is the V For Vendetta 7 Inch action figure. Certainly nothing to do with a recent V related stand for issues that matter in the States. Finding answers and holding people accountable to their actions. Now that is a lot of V masks. Who's sweaty in the cold now?

Continuing to ruin the read before hand is knowing that Ultimate Spider-Man #102 might be on again with the whole whatever it's going on with. The "Spider-Woman" bit was mentioned about a couple of places, here's hoping the mind is wiped enough that when sitting down it only remembers the previous issues and less of the chatter from strangers.

Somewhere in the pile of all that is holey with the ordering system, Casanova #6 will fit right in. Nevertheless, it's ability to jump about like a cracker on a pepper bed is not without charm. Without sense in places, but not without charm.

And it's about time now whether or not Jack Of Fables #5 will be the last to be pulled aside of the series. All this delay in reading the previous issues seriously dents the hood of a non-existent car. But, there's something about wanting to pick it up fresh that's a driving force. Majorly.

One of the better stand-alone type comics out there will be Futurama Comics #28. No need to know anything preceding, the jump in is shallow and quick to get wet. Fun with a danish and a sploog of yoghurt for the hell of tasting what otherwise would be a normal morning breakfast in front of the weet-bix.

Hey there, you sexy bricks and mortar thang

Shop talk

Given that the Comic Shop's profile on MySpace is a beast unto herself, there has been quite a few males out there intrigued by the presence. As such, they are most eager for more pictorial explorations and come with lines such as the following nubby poke:

Hi I'm from liverpool tooo . . u got a pic or sumethin or a msn addy??

Photos? Why sure she has, they're all up at the Flickr account. Not as riveting as those of the security camera, but what can you do?

As for an MSN address, forget that. That's the way of diminishing returns. the Comic Shop will chat, but only at 10a/170 George Street, Liverpool. She don't like the internet chatrooms. She claims that they're too impersonal and fake.

And we all float on, float on

Staff picks

Double shot of it all, on November 16, at least on the cinemas anyway. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and The Prestige. Two fairly polar opposite films. One a comedy, the other a sci-fi thriller on the tag, "A Friendship, That Became a Rivalry... A Rivalry, That Became a Battle."

Which, can't be too far from the scene of Escapists #5. Now, there are only two issues left including this one, and despite forgetting where in the run the other issues are, would seem like a terrible shame to miss out picking up this issue. Really should stop doing this.

For those who step inside the store during the run of its season, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, still flinging out the free passes for those over the age of 18.

Veronica #175 - Archie Comics

Reviews

Watching the plans fall into the allotted slots in the first story just hangs a direction into a well known path. Creaking over into the punch line panel and it's a raw feeling to know where the dirty foot prints were leading. All in the mud and the consistency of the step, the weaving in and out for the course is interesting. If not over a page too many. Damn, it's all there in the title of the story after all.

Taste a bit of the sorbet and a pirate in the mix seems perfunctory. The flatness of the end coming up to bring it right home with the third story in the issue. And it's where the issue really nicks in a favour for what is a good old story. Veronica's solution to her public speaking problem is revelatory. Perhaps this Archie fella should be used as much as he's using the Betty/Archie/Veronica triad. Sure works for Veronica in this situation.

Fish scales? Snake scales? A PKD reference

Shop talk

Stage one and day one of the online flog-a-log for A Scanner Darkly is underway. Thanks to Roadshow Films for the opportunity to spread the word on what has got to be one freaky visual feast of SF and drama. Philip K. Dick no less on the platform with Richard Linklater transforming it from the page to the silver screen.

Notice of the the competition and/or give away (oh semantics, smell a foot of talcum powder) hitting out on the mailing list first. After about a day or so, middle into Friday perhaps, the site's going to find some eyeballs peering across all the pages of the site.

Now it's just waiting to see if any one mentions or brings up what the reference is on the sign off line of "Fish?"

Hopefully it's just another run of the mill farewell that people figure to be par for the side dish.
