Supanova Sydney

Shop talk

Supanova has come and gone from Sydney for another year. This year, back at its old home stomping grounds of Olympic Park. Where the walk from one end to another is tiring, the sections cut off for better segregation and a fire alarm warns people that the day in question is Saturday.

Photos from the preview night are below:

Calm before the Sunday sale storm
Well before the storming of the Comic Shop The calm before the storm known as the Sunday clearance. When the announcement went off for 75% off all remaining stock, it was madness and a bedlam of carnage. Thrilling for those at the front of the line, a curios wonder for those stuck at the back.

Summer Glau at Supanova Sydney Summer Glau signing at the preview night Friday. Little did they explain on that first day, that each item, personal or otherwise, costs at least $30 for the autograph. Shock indeed.

More Tomb Raider for you? No treasures to be raided, just more fun in the cosplay department. They were later spotted still in their Lara Croft outfits at the only Hooters restaurant in Australia.

Star Wars: Visage of Tom Tom getting in an early sneak standing by the Star Wars costumes from Novus Ordo.

Mothman prepares for the chunder Mothman hanging outside one of the rooms at the Ibis Hotel. Where it smells far different in the morning.

Summer Glau signing at Supanova Sydney

The Multiverse

Summer Glau of FIREFLY and keeping the faith with SERENITY, (both of the Whedonverse) slamming back the lights and signing the prints and items at Supanova Sydney.

Volunteer at the waiting line on preview night really wasn't much help. Especially given that the stooge waits to tell whomever's lining up that each personal item is $30, prints are $30 and other such things range on from there.

No signs are about the place and there are no other people giving the heads up. Just one bloke at the end of a line one hour long.

Now, waiting for that hour to grab and autograph from Summer Glau will push many into forking the cash over. After all, it's been an hour in the line, only a few steps before being right in front of her and why not?

Well, that's exorbitant and an unexpected charge up from the backside in the dark. Bowlegged all night long afterwards, and the clean up is something of a mess.

Charging for the autograph is one thing. Not telling any one about that fact until they're right at the table, that's just not right at all. Worse still when that fee doesn't make the line move any faster. Slower still.

Nevertheless, the woman is scorching.

The Lone Ranger #2 - Dynamite Entertainment

Reviews

Great one, Tonto! You're standing at the front of the comic and that's about the best the whole thing has to offer.

Sure, there's the whole black out, look out from the kid by the fire side. That's just not enough though. It is really like that Ultimate feeling back when Peter Parker wasn't even Spider-Man in the first issue or two. Same here, and it's all build up.

Frankly though, it would be nice to remember anything after what chunder starts spitting out from the microwave with a sweaty bag. It's like certain types of paper are good at absorbing moisture and then there's plenty of others which suck.

From the opening page to the last, whatever transpires in between really doesn't stick.

Thunderbolts #107 - Marvel Comics

Reviews

Reading a comic with no prior catch up on the issues before is fraught with possible times of surprise and angst. Thunderbolts #107 feels just like that bottle of orange juice angst tipping into a shot glass of yoghurt.

Doc Ock is out fighting the fight, leading a good team? Then there's the various conversations which take place in peoples's minds. Fair enough, but damn if these people aren't too cheap to even pick up a few coins and dunk it into a pay phone for the call. At least they didn't go about with mobiles latched onto the sides of their heads.

Trying to figure out what the hell is going on is enough to make enjoying the reading time of a comic a lame duck hobbling into a pot.

Staff picks

End of the month now and October 26 brings with it the change of day light savings in not a few days after it. Also on that weekend, Supanova, where most of the Comic Shop will be. Here's hoping that it'll be somewhat extremely quiet in store as the bods rush the stall at the convention.

Is it wrong to be falling so behind that picking up a comic is a habit of just walking from the shelf to the counter? Yes, yes it is. Read what's good for you like a raw egg is for those who like watching slimy things slide down their throats. Protein! They'll claim, but really it's the embryo they like most of all.

Ultimate Spider-Man #101 continues on good but tail end of the Bagley and Bendis partnership. One story line behind and who knows what sorts of secret plot breaks are spilling about the place. They whisper the notion of clones from far back still lingering about and all.

So, who knows about Jack Of Fables #4? First three are on the waiting-to-be-read pile and it's at that point that most new series are given the final chance to prove themselves. So...

Sleeping it off, sleeping it all off

Staff picks

One more week before the madness of the con sets in and the chill of silence rolls in the shop for every one surely must be at Supanova right? October 19, mark that down in the diary as following October 18 and coming in before October 20. Unless those calendars are the new fangled ones with numbers and days on them. La-di-da mister, you're on fire donchaknow?

It's an odd feeling reading it, but then why should reading a comic be something safe and warm? Like what reading Casanova #5 most certainly will charge down the line. It's not like swimming in a vat of hot chocolate is all the rage. Well, if it is, where's the pool?

After the earlier hit this week of what can kill any thing in the Absolute format, Sandman #1 Special Edition seems rather, well, who knows? Not like DVDs are the only ones that can get away with calling each new reissue a "special edition"

And where it all kicks that guvyer looking superhero spider butt is Amazing Spider-Girl #1. Relaunching after that last long and impressive run. Not that there was really much reason to reboot it in the first place outside of it being far from the #1 it started and this one gets the jump on.
