Ninja turtles swimming in the cabbage soup

Shop talk

Another close of another promotion thanks to the folks over at Roadshow Films. This time, on the plate of half-shells, TMNT. Those foot soldier beating up loving mutant ninja turtles back on the big screen and without the hand of puppets working their guise.

TMNT - in-season passes on a half-shell

Running over the course of answers gets interesting only in the points of mistakes and shooting wide off the mark.

Question 1: What is the food of choice of the Ninja Turtles?

Except for the answer of cabbage soup, it was an all out pizza affair. Though talk with a standing order did spark the possibility of someone out there thinking it to be marshmallows. Glorious fluff that it is, not the answer for the prize here.

Question 2: Name the late actor who provided the voice of Splinter in the movie.

There was a hint sent out in the mailing list, mentioning the name of Mako. Or Makoto Iwamatsu for the keen. It was not left on the competition page itself, so those eagle eyes wanting to double check their Wikipedia facts already had a leg up if they were reading their newsletter.

Not everyone did, there was a shot of Kevin Clash or Peter Renaday as the voice actor. Though they may have at one stage been the voice of Splinter, they are still alive, certainly not late. A dead giveaway in the question itself as to the correct criteria.

Voldemort was clearly in jest.

Question 3: What is the name of goalie mask wearing human who helps the turtles from time to time?

Every one was clear on it being Casey Jones. Double points for throwing in his real first name, even if it is also mentioned on the Wikipedia.

Turn out was good and fair, though these questions were sweet compared to one about the Ninja Turtles' rock concert tour and the affected status of Venus De Milo. Don't know her? Never really existed according to canon.

To those who watched it before heading out of the house a few years back, very jarring to the mythos.

One week to Easter, every day to disappearing eggs

Shop talk

Please and thank you is such a lost art of communication in the world of sneaking in and running out with a guilt ridden face. More so when picking through the lucky dip which is not exactly a lucky dip to pick and run out with.

I am Easter Homer

Homer Simpson, greeting those who enter this Easter lead up period, decked out in sun hat and BBQ apron, holds onto a basket of big plastic eggs.

Inside those eggs, chocolate eggs that people find melts in their mouth. Or in their hand. Or in the back pocket after having forgotten the fact that it has been left there in the first place.

One week remains to the Easter period, where the Comic Shop will be closed over the public holidays of Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday.

Would be nice to see the basket at hold onto at least one egg come the end of said period. It's looking thin right now.

More comics than you'll ever read this week

The Multiverse

Word floats around that a collection worth gathering is a collection worth displaying. And true, to some extent. Or at least to the extent at which space will allow. And then there's the collection not entirely worth displaying. The display that crinkles up a question mark hovering over the vat of cool molten lava.

Room temperature with visions of the voice to wake up to

On the photo above are two stacks of comics. The higher one is the one of the comics that have been read. And the one on the far right is the one that everybody dreads when thinking about their collection. The part of the collection which rues the day and occupies the mind.

The stack on the far right is the stack of comics that are waiting to be read. On such example being a run of Jack of Fables from #1-5. It's as bad as it feels.

Puppet Up! Uncensored at the State Theatre

Reviews

Pricey is the first thing to kick in when looking at the tickets for Puppet Up! Uncensored from afar. And no joke, the rate is high. And with no-name brand puppets behind the Jim Henson Company's banner fronting the programme and cast, it's a hard sell to take in.

After all, where's the filthy cussing Kermit, the cantankerous Waldorf and Statdler. The racial epitaph spewing Swedish Chef?

Not part of this crew. That's Disney's lot now.

But, the stars are not the puppets, but the puppeteers and improv artists that have their hands stuck up the rears of the varied felt cast on stage. Hosted by Patrick Bristow, it's a veritable swag of comedic talent that is just a gut ripping experience to watch.

stars of the upper show

Cutting up the suggestions from the audience for each skit, with one almost goer in a scene in a comic shop, it's a quick and clean affair. Scene after scene of absolute laughter break in the 90 minute show with a speed that's leaves a question on time travel and beckoning for more.

Jokes are naturally born from the situations and the skill of the performers and artists. Inevitable cussing and lowest common denominator options fly from the seats in the dark and it's a quality of dismissing them for the more challenging that really leaves a lot to admire from the troupe.

Hard not to laugh out loud and long. Tears well and form with the option of having the ribs break out and split from the side of the body. Pricey for sure, but entirely worth it.

Buffy got back again

Staff picks

Take it up with the crazy person at the end of the bar chewing out the nuts. Only the nuts aren't nuts, they're the end of the corks from popped bottles. Hey, they look the same in this light don't you think?

March 29 and here creeps the close of another month. Where does the time fly intertionally? Carry on board with the luggage and reap what daylight saving hours will benefit those stragglers out for work.

For those too slow the first time around, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 is here again. It's a great read and drops in some nice Marvel Comics references. What's not to love when there's vampires, slayers and a bloke about with a patch over his eye?

It's the only thing right now between the end and the unbelievably excruciating wait for the new batch that will come out, so Futurama #30 will have to sate the hilarity of a Planet Express fix until then.

Alarms don't mean a thing.

Feed a little bit of that political distress

The Multiverse

Polling day for the state of New South Wales is rocking up closer and closer this weekend. Labour and Liberals locking horns over the state of business affairs and outlining who is the bigger offender in running things dead into the ground.

On the one hand, Peter Debnam for the Liberals and a man who can't seem to keep a business afloat. Even to the point of denying his connection and business dealings with said markers on his CV.

And on the other, Morris Iemma for Labour. A man with a high forehead and ministers who haven't been all that great in their track records for running of services and infrastructure.

Two party preferred system means that either one of these will have to rule the state with their combined numbers. Placing a vote for the Greens and Democrats apparently, as some people will joke, a throwaway gesture.

Personally, it's going down with the Greens and Democrats ahead of Labour with the right-wing parties wallowing with Liberal. To that end, an idea for a little political grandstanding in the polling areas for Saturday.

Take the ballots, vote for whichever party tickles the fancy and sounds like a winner. Fold up the ballot as instructed.

On the walk from the voting booth, stand in the middle with a look of despair and a voice of shock. Proclaim something along the lines of "Oh my stars and garters! I've made a huge mistake! I just voted [political party of opposing choice]!"

Then place the ballot in the box and walk away.

2007-03-24 @ 23:11

There were 338 boxes to fill below the black line on the ballot for the members of the legislative council. And when done fast and with preferences in mind, takes about 15 minutes or so.
