Counterside Noise

Bag full of ink, hands full of cut potatoes

One thing that the new store brings with it is the lack of brown paper bags to stash purchased comics in. No longer with that porno bag look, it's all about the white and the black and the branding.

Squat

And then there's the smacking of the ink and the rubber stamp on the little bags to keep up with the bigger version.

After an hour or two, it's the cracking of the wrists before the cracking of the rubber that makes the louder sounds.

Price check on the new DeLorean

Been a long time since the Aussie dollar has been able to hold steady against the US greenback. With that, and the continuing gooey good feeling of being in a brand new store, there's new prices hitting the shelves for comics coming in beginning from this week.

US prices on the left, Australian on the right.
1.99 - 4.75
2.25 - 5.15
2.50 - 5.50

3.25 - 6.75
3.50 - 6.95

3.95 - 7.45
4.25 - 7.95
4.50 - 8.55
4.95 - 8.95
5.95 - 10.95

Dropping its pants across the sundeck, the biggest benefit comes to those who pick up titles with a US cover price of $2.99 and $2.95. That's pretty much the industry standard so a lot of people will find more change in their pockets. One level that doesn't change is the $2.50, staying on the previous price.

Same deal with the fresh new trade collections. They drop a bit on the chin with the gut sucking it up a little.

Problem now is trying to figure what else to get with the extra cash left over from a weekly comics budget.

Listless and swinging about with a jockey strap

Setting up a mailing list never looked like it was going to be easy. Sitting around for the better part of the sun outside in the day is testament to that supposition.

Triggering and tweaking variables and settings to no end, it's a lot of work trying to figure out what's needed and wading through user tips and guides from all over the place. Worse still when the looks of them on the surface are bounties with answers.

Closer inspection revealing less so and not everything out there to help does. Especially when server set ups have their own configurations and quirks that can't always be accounted for.

Hours later and the first mailing list announcement hits. A doozy too, making large news about the change in prices for new comics.

Most of them coming down, but for rare comics like Fell and Casanova, a little bump up. On the whole, great stuff for collecting and a bit of a blow for those who don't have enough space as it is. Hard to pass up more comics when buying more is made cheaper.

After the fall and in the super hero aftermath

Non-stop action as the crowds of people paid a visit on the very first day at the new larger location. Legs were on all day and the crew busy with keeping the flow moving like dollops of ice cream into tubs of yogurt and back again.

Fun?

Hopefully so, the atmosphere was sure ripe for it. A swelling to extremes of smiles and working that carpet burn like a house set on a partial fire blaze. One sale to pull them in like a phoenix reborn.

On stand-by, a few of the super hero happy friends. Batman & Robin and Iron Man out front late in the day keeping the peace and making sure things were right and proper with the world.

Strutting with superheroes

Superman and even that kooky Space Ghost back inside helping out with the party.

One minute to go

Revving up the sorting and the shifting, not at all any more longer to go before opening up large and anew at the new store.

Finding Guffman

DVDs in racks, 18 inch action figures above the back issue bins, and the back issue bins to lose yourself in. It's different, it's big, it does smell pretty good.

(Guess the reference in the title of this entry.)

Counting down to two

Smell it!

Shelves are cleared and the action figures are off the hooks. Back issue bin is emptying raw with closer to nothing inside. The walls are naked and the posters are taking a sleep away from the blu-tac backing.

Ten days to go

The move is down and seriously under way, ready for the re-opening sale on Saturday at the new location next to the library. the Comic Shop is and for the next few hours before the last minutes of Friday night, a comic store with nothing but comics. Odd indeed.

Watch it large and live from 10:00 August 26.
