Superman Returns

After the intense wait of over how ever long it took to wipe away the memory of Christopher Reeve, Superman Returns is a pure delight. Brandon Routh slips comfortably and easily into the dual roles of Clark Kent and Superman.

Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane looks hungry and emaciated for the drive that burns inside her journalistic soul. Lex Luthor has never been as maniacal and as near deranged as Kevin Spacey's portrayal yet. Twisted is only a hint of this man's desire to kill Supes.

Sequences involving Superman at the rescue are sublime and fantastic to watch. Movement is so natural and free that it really does look like the guy can fly. Except in certain scenes where the cape billows to an awkward set of mini waves too smooth to blend into the subconscious.

An emotionally well made film, it does focus more on the relationship between Superman and Lois as much as it is between Superman and the earth as its saviour.

Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #1 - DC Comics

Speed Force problems abound from the end of some other mini series or series event or another thing entirely. There's a mention of this mystical force and yet nothing really to sink in a new set of dentures to. It's a hard bite for a cold read, like rinsing the mouth out with ice water after a brushing session.

Concern for the welfare of Bart is evident. Reasons behind this concern not really explored. Nothing more than Jay Garrick running around in the pie pan hat for the first issue. Thar be a weird flow of energy, but again, with no prior knowledge, a lack of hints proves to be some kind of teaser like material. Partly interesting, not quite fully formed.

52 Week Three - DC Comics

Nice work from the villain of current flavour in television and soon to be on the big screen once again. John Henry, aka Steel, again holds court with much of the issue featuring his massive presence and frame. However, despite the shiner of a switch at the end it doesn't light up the fires. Probably due to having no connect to the events surrounding the switch. Though the underlying breath of it all doesn't require much extrapolation.

Thrud the Barbarian - Thrud Comics

Parodies work on established characters and Thrud works on Conan. Great smelling as the pages are, the whole feel of it doesn't ride high enough. A meandering tale of Thrud going about as the dim wit of the kingdom. Brash, rash and with no sense of story to hold it all together, the comic feels empty. Like the air that enters the head after whiffing too hard and mighty on the pulp of the pages.

Family Guy Vol 1: 101 Ways To Kill - Devil's Due

Stewie Griffin hosts the book about his 101 various ways of dreaming to kill his mum, Lois. Style is straight from the eponymous cartoon. Drop dead references to all sort of things just for the sake of breaking the flow are there. A definite for the fans, nothing for those still unconvinced of it's lacking style of humour. Burn.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

Rush from the rest of the crew sticks X-Men 3: The Last Stand with a side sore. A veritable hash of going too fast and throwing everything onto the wall with no regard for continuity and character development. This is true.

X-Men 3 does rush things, moving so fast as to beat some kind of unseen or unknown record. Explosions and fight scenes are thick with action and bodies flying about the place. The Juggernaut delivers one of the worst lines in the movie and Wolvie kicks it up a notch in terms of cool in the heat of battle.

Beast is magnificent and it's no wonder they chose Kelsey Grammer to be underneath the blue fur. Of all the new characters swimming in the sea of mutants, his is the most developed and most valid. The Danger Room finally gets a look in and it's a pretty fantastic sight.

Plot points jump all over the place and there's this burn of emotion. A heart warming film really. That much works and for that, it's a good film. Certainly not for the whole, but the majority is great.

Of course, what the hell the Phoenix is really there for never gets a reason.
