Shearing the sheds of Black Sheep

Shop talk

Another one down at the Comic Shop and for those who are on the mailing list, the giveaway to see the film, Black Sheep is done and over.

And when a giveaway wraps up, the shearing of the wool comes along in picking through the clumps at a few of the answers from the winners and shearers.

Who's the black sheep in your family or set of friends?

Self deprecation was a bit on the high ratio here as the answers were a little on variants of "Me" with even a nice little reason why. Of course, if not the self, it's a younger sibling for all their awkwardness and general corner funking up skills in the house.

"Black sheep in the family?"
"Why? Who lives in the shed this week, papa?"

Name one thing that comes from sheep

What's the first thing that comes to mind when dealing with sheep? Abattoirs naturally. Meat and lamb chops on the menu here. Wool clumps dropping all over the place as the shaving continues apace.

What comes next with a film about sheep in Middle Earth? Jokes and riffs on the New Zealanders themselves. Baby Kiwis and hernias on this section of the emergency ward.

Complete your version of this lyric...

So the old nursery rhyme hands out bags of wool to people such as "One for the master, and one for the dame, and one for the ..." and the whole thing from like the gates at the farm are wide open.

People who shall be in abundance of wool and that particular knitting supply includes the likes of crackheads, mutants, idiot drivers and even Stalin's iron rule. What a spectrum.

That's it for this promo and thanks again to Dendy Cinemas and Icon Films for the double passes.

Stay tuned to your inbox for the next time a competition comes along and you're in for the thrill of finding yourself a winner for your genius. Is funny, is good material for the win.

For the win people!

The Reaping and the counting

Shop talk

Dropping on a stone last week, a box full of 3D lenticular promotional cards. Lenticular! Oh what long wait since the late 90s for a lenticular something or anything in a comic shop.

And the soundtrack to the first Spider-Man film doesn't count, even if it angle-tastic.

From Roadshow Films in flogging the new Hilary Swank movie, The Reaping:

A former Christian missionary (Hilary Swank) who lost her faith after her family was tragically killed, has since become a world-renowned expert in disproving religious phenomena. But when she investigates a small Louisiana town that is suffering from what appear to be the Biblical plagues, she realizes that science cannot explain what is happening and she must regain her faith to combat the dark forces threatening the community.

Not a lot going on when it's a slide into time to count and stack the many, many, many(!) cards in the box. One ten makes a pile and then a few more. Until those piles stack themselves so high that the Gods of Egypt will snap a cracking whip into the plebs to build upon itself, a pyramid.

The Reaping, the counting, oh, the counting

All up, like the take down of the below the line of the big white sheet thing at the recent state elections, 793 cards all up. Good thing to flip over too. They work well as postcards to strangers and friends. All that ample white space and it's of a sturdy card stock to boot.

Drop in, pick one up. Or more. It's not like other people don't want to have strange things sent to them in the mail you know.

Swinging in with a fiery end

Staff picks

One day after Valentines and it's Blaze on with Ghost Rider finally hitting the screen. Can't comment on much outside this constant drive to whiff the film poster hanging at the entrance of the Comic Shop. Them smaller ones which disappeared quicker than the larger ones certainly giving up more than their share of nasal delights.

And these are the ramblings of a code head.

Quick, making full of the head squeeze as the story jams into a tiny slit across the frow, and it's the expected reading sensation of Casanova #7. Where, like any short form worth its salt, a story starts and ends between the covers. It's diversionary, it's quick, it's enough to pass the cheap time on the walk from one end of a suburb to the other.

Which can't really be said same for a tome like Hellshock Definitive edition volume 1. Jae Lee's story started and aborted many years ago finally finds the last chapter to close out the book and wraps it up nicely all painful like with this collection. Not buying it though.

Making a pass on Ghost Rider

Shop talk

Eagle eye and casual glance observers walking into the place to be over the last round of weeks will have noted the Ghost Rider poster on their way in.

Ghost Rider locks on the eye

With the landing of the box from Sony promotions, the tale unfolds a little more. One side of the giveaway involves the passes, good for two and the entire run of the film in the cinemas.

On the passing lane with Ghost Rider

And the other half are all about the posters that can be seen underneath in the photo above. Strange thing on the back about an online magazine, Don't Panic.

Sniff the poster if you get the chance. Really smells something smashing fantastic. Nostril approach may vary.

Chainsaw massacre bleeds out the door

Shop talk

Passes no more in the hands of the Comic Shop for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. The last of the last of the free movie passes through Roadshow Films walking out the door on the weekend.

Interesting methods of half direction and slight delusion in the give away period which sees a slight overlap into that of A Scanner Darkly.

One soul, on the Saturday toward the very end, comes face up to the offer with a slight misunderstanding on the concept of free. Bamboozling with questions, the offer comes quick and fast with a jab to the left cleft and it's not unexpected for more than a second to pass for it to sink in.

"How much does it cost for the free passes?"

A Scammer Barking

Shop talk

Swig a trick for there's only one day left in the giveaway comp flogging thing between the Comic Shop and Roadshow Films for A Scanner Darkly. Smells like a winner this film does. Sci-fi, drugs, rotoscopic action, Linklater and PKD. Too many angle to appreciate.

One enterprising young chap has taken the Substance D to a quad splice ethos. Instead of entering just the one time, as is mentioned in the terms and conditions of the comp, this entrant has spawned eight different identities for the campaign. Sadly, despite fielding eight different names, each with their own email addresses, the answers all ride in the same.

Not only that, all the entry slots fall inside of 20 seconds after the previous. It's red flag if ever there was one to screw up the whites load in the laundry.

Take it from one who's a massive comper, before throttling back by circumstance in the earlier part of the year, watch where you're spitting from.

From the looks of things (and as someone who manages to average six hours of television on average an average night for a rolling two month survey period) the trailers haven't been too prominent.

At least not on the channels during the 19:00 to 02:00 period most nights the box is on. Guess catching a sight of these elusive trailers will be beyond the warm-up period to the release of the theatrical season.

Fish scales? Snake scales? A PKD reference

Shop talk

Stage one and day one of the online flog-a-log for A Scanner Darkly is underway. Thanks to Roadshow Films for the opportunity to spread the word on what has got to be one freaky visual feast of SF and drama. Philip K. Dick no less on the platform with Richard Linklater transforming it from the page to the silver screen.

Notice of the the competition and/or give away (oh semantics, smell a foot of talcum powder) hitting out on the mailing list first. After about a day or so, middle into Friday perhaps, the site's going to find some eyeballs peering across all the pages of the site.

Now it's just waiting to see if any one mentions or brings up what the reference is on the sign off line of "Fish?"

Hopefully it's just another run of the mill farewell that people figure to be par for the side dish.

Gunpowder, treason and the mask finally drops

Shop talk

Finally, with the creep into and over the date of the infamous gunpowder plot, the V mask, as seen in V for Vendetta, comes off.

Remember remember the fifth of November

Timely too given the encroaching footsteps of summer. Who knows how long it's really possible to breathe through the ears in order to keep the heated air at the front of the face relatively cool.

Thanks again to the contacts at the British Frieght Company and Roadshow Films for the masks in the first place.

Super fun happy cold cut baloney time

Shop talk

For those without a connection to the pay cable that delivers the pricey version of repeats and schlock to the TV...

Commercial filmed on the first day of the big reopening/moving sale back in August. Sadly, hanging shot of the store isn't one taken in the heat of the people but of an after hours set up.

Spot the spelling mistake a true fanboy would never let slip through.
