End of Christmas with a fallen angel

Christmas is a time of red. Red on Santa's sleigh, and his coat. A red nose for tipsy lead reindeer, Rudolph. Red fists as people bash their ways through the doors of the post-Christmas sales. Red in their bank accounts as they ram those credit cards beyond the point of bleeding. Red, red, red...

One of the most critically acclaimed series of 2004 makes the jump to IDW, as new artist J.K. Woodward introduces readers to the enigmatic city of Bete Noire. In its shadows resides the Fallen Angel, whose origin has long been a mystery... until now.

Much time has passed since we last saw her, and in the first issue of the new series, dreams of her long-suppressed past are surfacing and making her life even more torturous than it already is. Dreams that anticipate the return of someone from her past who may hold the key to her future.

New York Times Best selling author Peter David invites you to enter Bete Noire...and get ready for a long and spooky stay.

Fallen Angel, jumping from DC, where it made for limbo like a dancer with no back. It's not the only thing jumping around this final week of 2005.

There are people who can't get enough of those primates, in which case, Revolution on the Planet of the Apes from Mr Comics should help with a little easing of the pangs.

When it's not all about Peter in Spider-Man, it's all about the costume. And if not that, then the whole spider thing. In Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane from Marvel it'll be about Mary Jane. And who doesn't love a smokin' MJ?

Origin of the species; all that you can't kill off

Make with the monkey love like a mad man in Vaseline. Everywhere you turn and roll over, there's that, that Kong! Comics can't even escape his gorilla grip. Dark Horse doing the rounds with their license of another adaptation like they know best in Kong: 8th Wonder Of World.

Over back in the world of Marvel Comics, Spider-Woman flies in with an origin series all her own. (Of course it would be, otherwise it'd be titled after someone else.)

Exploding out of the pages of New Avengers!! This all-new epic limited series chronicles the intriguing secret history of Jessica Drew and her journey from child experiment to Hydra agent to S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to super hero to private eye to Avenger!

New Avengers scribe Brian Michael Bendis teams up with searing hot newcomer Brian Reed (USM video game) and introduces the Marvel debut of the stunning full color visuals of the Luna brothers (Ultra, Girls).

This mini series is packed with intrigue that will lead directly into the upcoming Spider-Woman monthly that debuts early next year from Bendis and Eisner-award-winning Alex Maleev (Daredevil).

Should monkeys and spiders not tickle your dandy fancy, a slew of debuts for the penultimate shipping week of the year. (Quite possibly the last if Christmas/New Years delays continue apace.)

For those with an iron maiden type fetish, Iron Man The Inevitable from Marvel or slash through Nightmare On Elm Street Paranoid from Avatar Press for those not sleeping in this summer heat.

Looking for some bible bashing frivolity? Finger the Testament from DC Comics. Not enough Joe in your life? Rankle the ranks with GI Joe Sigma 6 from Devil's Due.

Out for the robot mafia and killer models, battle with The Intimidators from Image Comics or just drop another coin or two with the return of Street Fighter II from UDON.

Kong Homer rides the train to success and work

King Kong Homer - The Simpsons Halloween Train of Terror - Hamilton Action
Forget Mighty Joe Young, those gorillas in the mist, that Orangutan, Clyde (Manis), from Every Which Way But Loose, even the thousands and thousands of monkeys hitting away at the typewriters for Shakespearean flukes. Those primates have nothing over the one true King.

King Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World, back again to the fore of monster lore and living it large. Thanks to the wily efforts of Kiwi directory, Peter Jackson, Kong is out there to clamber atop the buildings to reclaim the crown.

The only one that may possess even a hint of a challenge to the one from Monster Island is Kong Homer.

Himself bearing a stunning likeliness to the King of Kings, Kong Homer is a married ape who is more prone to sleeping and drinking than King Kong. Any match in that case, would be severely handicapped.

Place your bets, place your bets.

No shadows to run to from the Whedonverse

Shadowplay #1 (of 4); writers Amber Benson & Christina Z with artists Ben Templesmith & Ashley Wood

Shadowplay #1 (of 4); writers Amber Benson & Christina Z with artists Ben Templesmith & Ashley Wood
Thursday sees Joss Whedon's Firefly universe hit the big screens nationally and with much public access in Serenity.

Seth Green continues with his co-created mini series from the Top Cow about university students and their wild powers in Freshmen.

Now, Amber Benson gets in with the fray with a comic entitled, Shadowplay, out from IDW Publishing...

In "Demon Father John's Pinwheel Blues," Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Ben [Templesmith] craft a tale of a syndicate of vampire street children that is turned upside down by new recruit Pinwheel.

In "Shunt," Christina Z and Ashley [Wood] present the tale of the perfect woman, who gives up the perfect life to uncover a heinous human slavery ring run by an elite group of vampires. Vampires who transform their beautiful female victims into the most sensually marketable product. Within the torture and depravity lies a twisted tale of obsessive passion and furious loyalty.

Apparently there is no escaping the claws of the Whedonverse.
