All Star Superman #1; written by Grant Morrison; art and cover by Frank Quitely
First person to come to mind when the average passerby is asked about superheroes is Superman. The Last Son of Krypton has got a certain lock on the first port of call in their minds. Clark Kent, front and centre along with "Truth, Justice and the American Way."
A way of life which might be up for serious debate as the definition makes for a touchy subject as the cracker nights drag on. Good times can be had though, these consisting more of nostalgia and the "essence" of a character. Hence,
All Star Superman.
DC launches the newest addition to its All Star line of comics -- where the industry's top creative talents refine the iconic focus of the world's greatest super-heroes. Writer Grant Morrison (JLA, Seven Soldiers) and artist Frank Quitely (The Authority, New X-Men) -- the acclaimed team behind JLA: Earth 2 -- are at it once again, this time to strip down the Man of Steel to his timeless, essential elements.
The series kicks off with a 12-issue story arc touching on all the classic aspects of the Superman mythology, starting with a daring rescue of a doomed group of helionauts on the surface of the sun. The massive amounts of solar radiation affect Superman in a way no one could possibly anticipate -- except Lex Luthor!
Back to basics, it's the kind of Superman that the world in general knows more than the regular comic book reading public.
For those interested, the
Red Sun crew will be filming some more finishing location shots for
Superman Returns in the CBD.

Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur #1 (of 3); by P. Craig Russell, Galen Showman and Lovern Kindzierski
Following one last adventure for the Jewels of
Gwahlur, Conan the savage stopped by the green lands around the Murray River basin. At least, what were once green. Recent reports reveal that the ecological system has come under heavy stress with much of the area devastated and drowning in a shadow of its once glorious self.
With a former dancing girl by his side -- reports of which claim she is posing as
the dead oracle of a primitive cult -- the savage was left speechless at the sight of the site. Especially given that his souvenir photo (pictured) features a rather lush and healthy outlook.
"To find out that three quarters of the trees in that area are dead or dying is an absolute shock... it's a national shame,"
said Tom Widdup, from the New South Wales National Parks Association.
The Cimmerian would neither confirm nor deny an association with the mysterious ranger when asked if Widdup was part of his small band of mercenaries.
The constant humming and buzzings of felling is suspected as one of the main reasons for the red river gums showing as much distress in their bark as they are.

Incredible Hulk #77; Words: Peter David, pencils: Lee Weeks, inks: Tom Palmer
Walking back from the depths of a well-watered black lagoon, a honeymooning couple were stunned into their shanty with a sighting of a hulking mound of gamma irradiated muscle mass. Gathering up their belongings and video camera, the couple raced to the nearest ranger station to report their findings. What they had witnessed was no monster, but the international movie star known as the Hulk.
Known to authorities and citizens everywhere, the Hulk was apparently taking part in a photo shoot for new test frangrance, Tempest Fugit. Explaining their panic, the couple reasoned that with the cold rain hitting their skin and the poor lighting, that they were of right mind to figure a creature from a black lagoon was set to terrorise their own little J-grade movie set up.
Orchestrating the shoot was long-time collaborator,
Peter David, with artist Lee Weeks providing the visuals to the campaign.
Working with a slogan subtitle of "Time Flies," the collaboration marks a return to form and style after David's departure from the decade long run with Jade Jaws.
Long time associate of the Hulk, Bruce Banner, was seen taking advantage of the catering table at the set.

Concrete: The Human Dilemma #1 by Paul Chadwick
On the outskirts of a cropped image, a woman answering to her name has been snapped in a photograph handling a subject that was to feature as a focal point in a frame. Later discovered to be Maureen, Maureen was lost for words as she faced a litany of questions and a conflagration of wild hand gestures. Taken aback by the outburst of the photographer, the named woman remained silent as she retreated behind the suddenly roped off area.
Speechwriter Ron Lithgow, the man at the centre of the camera lens, was set up for his photo shoot. A promotional brainwashing work recently commissioned from a CEO on high. Celebrated as the being known as Concrete, it was to serve as the reflective back cover to the brochure in the campaign. It now looks likely that the plate used will either be scrapped or salvaged into a larger composite for a new miniseries based on his return.
What connection this Maureen had to Concrete remains to be seen, though it's believed that the hand belonging to Maureen is the same hand that belongs to the companion of Lithgow, who also goes by the name of Maureen. Rumours are also circulating that the assignment in question will court brains into an old-fashioned laundry type service.
