Summer time puts skin on the line

Nothing like working to the beat of the summer's sniper hot rays. Walking around with a sweat from global warming, tight clothes and a selection of pores gunning out the body's waste through the salt water.

Nothing except for a healthy dose of sun smarts in the ever going battle for skin protection.

For some, that's as easy as being unsociable. Staying indoors for as long as the humble and randy koala sleeps asleep in the trees. Doors and windows, down and closed, any hint of sunshine scaring them back down into the basement or into the closet without a sunroof.

But not everyone can live the luxurious life of a hermit. Others have to brave the world and face the faces of the people outside.

And for those, there's a whole range of systems in place. Sunscreen, dubious lotions with UV protection, and simple clothes and hats. For lovers of leather despite all weather, full body suits are even out there. Though they're usually made for indoor parties.

Careful on the zinc though. Wouldn't want to go overboard.

Locals in a fit over amazingly excessive sweat

Watershed of rain one day, a trail blazing scorch of heat the next. As the days and metres of the catchment areas across the Sydney region continue to be tallied up and dry, locals are keeping their eyes on another meter. Competitions are now underway for the best and biggest pools of sweat to come through the summer heat. From highs and lows across the fire warnings, people are collecting buckets and bedpans in an effort to best each other.

Citizens have been sighted walking around mopping their faces and arm pits with chamois and super soaking towels. In a climate of ill-determined regularity, it's become an amusing past-time of late. Exercise and sitting under a cancer causing sun have been just some of the tactics employed by the participants as they strive to amass the most sickening collection before the end of the season.

Sweat pool organiser, Manny Gint, says that the inspiration of the summer running competition came to him after waking up in a damp mattress. "I got the inspiration after waking all wet in my bed. Granted, it was a waterbed and I did have on spikes, but that idea was still burning inside."

One month remains before contestants must hand in their collected pools to be judged and calculated by the judges.
